HERBSTENBURG CASTLE

It will be a required stop during Your stay in Dobbiaco. It was acquired by the Herbst earls in the 1500 a.D. and it became famous because between the 1508 and 1511 Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor  settled there his general quarter while moving War to the Republic of Venice.

In memory of these periods the Emperor ordered the construction of the "Via Dolorosa", an itinerary of five chapels, considered today as the most ancient Stations of the Cross, a masterpiece of local art and a window on the scuptural art of that time.
